My Story

Michael Currie proudly serves as the current Commander of American Legion Post 59 in Stoughton, Wisconsin. A Vietnam veteran and dedicated advocate for veterans, Michael brings a lifetime of service, leadership, and commitment to both the Post and the community.

Born and raised in Madison, Wisconsin, Michael graduated from Central High School in 1967. In January 1968, he enlisted in the United States Navy and completed boot camp at Great Lakes Naval Training Center before being assigned to Treasure Island Naval Base in San Francisco.

Later that year, Michael volunteered for service in Vietnam. Following additional specialized training, he arrived in Da Nang in May 1969 and was assigned to River Security and Task Force Clearwater. Stationed at Tan My, just south of Hue, he patrolled the Perfume River in support of military operations during the Vietnam War. After the closure of his base in early 1970, he was reassigned to the Small Craft Repair Facility in Da Nang before returning home in June 1970.

Following his military service, Michael attended Madison Area Technical College, where he earned an Associate Degree in Commercial and Graphic Art. He went on to build a successful 30-year career with the State of Wisconsin before retiring in 2011.

In 1993, Michael and his wife, Kimberly, made Stoughton their home, where they raised their two children, Lauren and Kevin. Today, they enjoy spending time with their two granddaughters.

Michael became a member of American Legion Post 59 in 2011 and is also a member of the Stoughton VFW. He proudly serves on Post 59's Honor Guard and is an active member of the Vietnam Veterans of America and the Mobile Riverine Force Association.

As Commander of Post 59, Michael is committed to preserving the Legion's proud traditions while continuing its mission of serving veterans, supporting their families, mentoring youth, promoting patriotism, and strengthening the Stoughton community. His military service, community involvement, and dedication to his fellow veterans exemplify the values of the American Legion and his unwavering commitment to serving others.
