Branch of Service: Army
Post 59 Commander - 1930
My Story
Rev. Merton L. Aldridge (1892–1949) was a respected veteran, minister, and community leader whose life reflected a deep commitment to service—both to his country and to the people of Stoughton, Wisconsin.
Born on April 2, 1892, Aldridge came of age during a time when America was entering the global stage. Like many young men of his generation, he answered the call to serve, joining the United States Army during the era of World War I. His military service placed him among the early veterans who would later form the backbone of the American Legion.
Following his service, Aldridge returned home and devoted his life to faith and community. He became the pastor of the Universalist Church in Stoughton, where he served not only as a spiritual leader but also as a guiding presence in the civic life of the city. The Universalist tradition, known for its message of inclusiveness and service, aligned closely with Aldridge’s character and values.
In 1930, Aldridge was elected Commander of American Legion Post 59, a role that placed him at the forefront of supporting veterans in the years following World War I. During this early period of the Legion’s history, leadership required dedication, organization, and a strong sense of mission. Aldridge helped strengthen the Post’s presence in Stoughton, fostering camaraderie among veterans and reinforcing the Legion’s commitment to service, patriotism, and community involvement.
His leadership came at a time when the American Legion was still establishing itself nationwide. Commanders like Aldridge played a crucial role in shaping local posts into lasting institutions—places where veterans could find support, purpose, and connection after their military service.
Beyond his formal roles, Aldridge was known as a man of character, faith, and quiet leadership. His dual service—as both a minister and a veteran leader—made him a unique and influential figure in Stoughton’s early 20th-century history.
Rev. Aldridge passed away on January 3, 1949, at the age of 56. Though his life was relatively short, his impact endured through the institutions he helped strengthen and the community he served.
Rev. Merton L. Aldridge represents the very spirit upon which American Legion Post 59 was built:
-
Service to country
-
Commitment to community
-
Leadership rooted in integrity
-
Faith in helping others
His contributions remain part of the foundation of Post 59 and the broader Stoughton community.
