Harry O. Vold
07/18/1897-09/16/1965
Branch of Service: Army
Post 59 Commander - 1938
My Story
Harry O. Vold served as Commander of Otis Sampson American Legion Post 59 in 1938, leading the organization during a time of peace between two world wars while continuing the Legion's mission of serving veterans, their families, and the Stoughton community.
A veteran of the United States Army, Harry belonged to the generation whose military service helped shape the American Legion in its earliest decades. His leadership came just one year before the outbreak of World War II in Europe, as communities across the nation continued to support veterans of the First World War while preparing for an uncertain future.
Outside of his Legion service, Harry was well known in Stoughton for his strong work ethic and varied career. He served as manager of Steiner Manufacturing and later Stoughton Garment Company, both important local employers during the city's industrial growth. Later in life, Harry became chef at the Stoughton Country Club, where he was known for his hospitality and dedication to serving others.
Harry was married to Helen (Gjestson) Vold (1901–1966), and together they made their home in Stoughton. Following his death on September 16, 1965, at the age of 68, he was laid to rest in Lutheran East Cemetery in Stoughton. Helen passed away the following year and was buried beside him.
Although many details of his military service and Legion activities have been lost to time, Harry O. Vold's legacy lives on through his leadership of Post 59 and his lifelong commitment to both his fellow veterans and the Stoughton community. He represents the generation that helped establish the strong foundation upon which American Legion Post 59 continues to serve today.
