Branch of Service: Coast Guard
Post 59 Commander - 1923
My Story
George W. Schultz (June 4, 1912 – September 18, 1991) was a Stoughton community leader, U.S. Coast Guard veteran, and an early member of American Legion Post 59. He served as Post Commander in 1923, helping guide the young veterans organization during its formative years in the community.
Schultz served in the United States Coast Guard, representing the generation of Americans who came of age during the interwar period and later supported their communities through public service and civic leadership.
In civilian life, he became deeply involved in local government and public administration. Schultz served as City Clerk and later Postmaster for the City of Stoughton, roles that placed him at the center of municipal operations and communication in the growing Dane County community.
He married Elizabeth (“Liz”) Schultz, whom he met while attending school in Whitewater. The couple married on May 31, 1944 while he was home on leave from Coast Guard service. Elizabeth became active in numerous community organizations including the Stoughton Library Board and local civic clubs, reflecting the couple’s strong commitment to civic life in Stoughton.
Throughout his life, Schultz was remembered as a dedicated public servant whose work in local government and veteran organizations helped strengthen the Stoughton community. His service to American Legion Post 59 represents part of the early leadership that established the Post as an important veterans organization in the city.
