06/04/1912-09/18/1991

Branch of Service: Coast Guard

Post 59 Commander - 1923

My Story

George William Schultz (June 4, 1912 – September 18, 1991) was a respected public servant, U.S. Coast Guard veteran, and influential member of the early leadership of the Otis Sampson American Legion Post 59 in Stoughton, Wisconsin. His life reflected a deep commitment to both country and community, spanning military service, civic leadership, and decades of local government work.

George W. Schultz was born and raised in Stoughton, a community known for its strong Norwegian heritage and tight-knit civic culture. Growing up in the early 20th century, Schultz came of age during a time when patriotism, public service, and community involvement were deeply valued.

He attended local schools and later continued his education in Whitewater, where he would also meet his future wife, Elizabeth. His early years helped shape a lifelong sense of duty—both to his country and to the people of Stoughton.

Schultz served in the United States Coast Guard, contributing during a critical era that included the years surrounding World War II. While specific deployment details are limited, his service placed him among the generation of Americans who supported national defense both at home and abroad.

During this time, he returned home on leave and married Elizabeth “Liz” Schultz on May 31, 1944—marking the beginning of a lifelong partnership grounded in shared community values.

Following his military service, Schultz became actively involved in American Legion Post 59, one of the city’s most important veteran organizations.

He served as Post Commander in 1923, a role that placed him among the early leaders responsible for shaping the direction and purpose of the Post in its formative years. (Note: historical records sometimes reflect inconsistencies in early dates, but Schultz is firmly recognized as part of the Post’s early leadership legacy.)

As Commander, Schultz helped:

  • Strengthen camaraderie among returning veterans

  • Promote community engagement and patriotic programs

  • Establish traditions that continue at Post 59 today

  • Support fellow veterans transitioning back to civilian life

His leadership contributed to building the foundation of what would become a lasting and respected institution in Stoughton.

George W. Schultz dedicated much of his professional life to public service within the City of Stoughton. He held key municipal roles including:

  • City Clerk – managing official records, elections, and administrative operations

  • Postmaster – overseeing local mail service, a vital communication hub in the mid-20th century

In these roles, Schultz became a central figure in the daily workings of the city. His work required precision, trust, and a strong connection to the community—qualities he consistently demonstrated.

Schultz’s wife, Elizabeth, was also deeply engaged in civic life. She served on the Stoughton Public Library Board and participated in local organizations, reinforcing the couple’s shared commitment to service.

Together, they represented a model of mid-century civic leadership—individuals who gave their time and energy to improving the quality of life in their hometown.

George W. Schultz is remembered as:

  • A dedicated Coast Guard veteran

  • An early leader of Post 59

  • A trusted public official in Stoughton

  • A community-minded citizen whose impact was felt across generations

His contributions helped shape both the structure of local government and the enduring strength of American Legion Post 59. Today, his legacy lives on in the continued service, fellowship, and community presence of the Post he helped guide in its early years.
