Edwin O. Olson

Edwin O. Olson was a Stoughton, Wisconsin veteran and businessman whose life spanned nearly nine decades of profound change in American history. Born on March 1, 1895, Olson grew up during a time when Stoughton was developing into a thriving community shaped by hardworking families and strong civic values.

Like many young men of his generation, Olson answered the call to serve his country during the era of World War I, joining the United States Army. His service placed him among the early group of veterans who would later form the foundation of local organizations such as American Legion Post 59, where camaraderie, service, and remembrance became lasting pillars.

Following his military service, Olson returned to Stoughton and established himself in the local business community. By 1923, he was working as a grocer, contributing to the everyday life of the city. In time, he expanded his role in Stoughton’s commercial landscape by becoming the owner of Edwin O. Olson & Son Clothing, a business that reflected both entrepreneurial spirit and a commitment to serving his neighbors.

Olson’s life was rooted not only in business but also in family. He was married to Ruth (Hougan) Olson, and together they were part of the close-knit fabric of Stoughton society during the mid-20th century. Like many veterans of his era, Olson represented a generation that returned home from war to build families, businesses, and communities that would endure for decades.

Living until June 27, 1984, Olson witnessed extraordinary transformations—from horse-drawn streets to the modern age—while remaining connected to the traditions and values that defined his hometown. His legacy endures as part of the historical foundation of American Legion Post 59, representing the service, resilience, and community leadership of Stoughton’s early veterans.
