Alvin M. Loverud

12/29/1895-10/09/1947

Branch of Service: Army

Post 59 Commander - 1937

My Story

Alvin M. Loverud was one of the early leaders of The Otis Sampson American Legion Post 59 in Stoughton, Wisconsin, serving as Post Commander in 1937 during a period when the American Legion was becoming deeply rooted in communities across the country. As part of the World War I generation, Loverud belonged to a group of veterans who returned home from war determined to continue serving their communities through civic leadership, veterans advocacy, and public service.

Born on December 29, 1895, Alvin grew up during a rapidly changing period in American history. When the United States entered World War I in 1917, thousands of young men from Wisconsin answered the call to serve, and Loverud was among them. He served in the United States Army during the First World War, joining a generation whose experiences overseas would forever shape both their lives and the nation itself. Veterans of that era often carried a strong sense of duty long after returning home, and many became deeply involved in organizations like the American Legion to support fellow veterans and strengthen their communities.

Following his military service, Loverud pursued a career in law and government service. He eventually became an Assistant U.S. Attorney working within the Federal Securities Division, a position that reflected both professional accomplishment and public trust. During the 1930s and 1940s, the nation was still recovering from the effects of the Great Depression, and federal oversight of securities and financial practices became increasingly important. His work placed him within a significant period of American legal and governmental reform.

In addition to his legal career, Alvin remained connected to veteran and civic causes. His election as Commander of Post 59 in 1937 demonstrated the respect he had earned among fellow Legionnaires. During those early decades, Post Commanders played a major role in organizing veteran support efforts, patriotic observances, memorial events, youth activities, and community outreach. The American Legion was not simply a social organization — it served as a vital support system for veterans adjusting to civilian life while also promoting American values and civic responsibility within local communities.

Alvin was married to Georgia Kinsman Loverud, and together they were part of the broader fabric of the Stoughton community during an important era in the city’s history. Like many veterans of his generation, he balanced professional life, family responsibilities, and continued public service.

Sadly, Alvin M. Loverud passed away on October 9, 1947, at the age of 51. Although his life ended relatively young, his contributions to both his country and community left a lasting mark. His name remains part of the long history of leaders who helped guide and build The Otis Sampson American Legion Post 59 into the organization it is today.

Today, Alvin M. Loverud is remembered not only as a past commander, but as part of the foundation of Post 59 itself — one of the veterans whose leadership, service, and dedication helped preserve the values of honor, patriotism, and community for future generations of Legionnaires in Stoughton, Wisconsin.
